چکیده

T his article is the second in a two-part series in memory of Serge Lang, who passed away on September 12, 2005. In the first article, which appeared in the May2006 issueof theNotices , we invited contributions from a number of individuals who knew Serge on a somewhat personal level. For this part, we sought expositions which would describe, with certain technical details as necessary, aspects of Serge’s contribution tomathematical research. To begin understanding the breadth and depth of Serge’s research endeavors,we refer to Volume I of his Collected Papers, where he outlined his mathematical career inanumberofperiods. We list here Lang’s own description of his research, using only a slight paraphrasing of what he wrote (see tableat topofnextpage). For this article, theeditors choosetousethis listasaguide, thoughitshouldbe obvious that we cannot address all facets of Lang’s mathematical research. In addition to research, Lang’s contribution to mathematics includes, as we all know, a large number of books.Howmany booksdid Langwrite? We (the editors) are not sure how to answer that question. Should we count political monographs such as Challenges? How do we count multiple

Birational Geometry for Number Theorists

When thinking about the course “birational geometry for number theorists” I so näıvely agreed to give at the Göttingen summer school, I could not avoid imagining the spirit of the late Serge Lang, not so quietly beseeching one to do things right, keeping the theorems functorial with respect to ideas, and definitions natural. But most important is the fundamental tenet of Diophantine geometry, f...

Methodological Shortcomings in Classical Mathematical Economics: A Critical Examination of the Contributions of Cournot, Jevons and Walras

This paper examines critically the contributions of Cournot, Jevons and Walras as the founders of classical mathematical economics from a methodological standpoint. Advances in different economic schools and doctrines in the 19th century produced an environment of multi-dimensionality in economic analysis which was regarded by the pioneers of classical mathematical economists as a chaotic state...

An Overview of Mathematical Contributions of Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid Al-Kashi [Kashani]

In this paper, we study Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid al-Kashi's (1380-1429 A.D.) main mathematical achievements. We discuss his al-Risala al-muhitiyya ("The Treatise on the Circumference"), Risala al-watar wa'l-jaib ("The Treatise on the Chord and Sine"), and Miftah al-hisab ("The Key of Arithmetic"). In particular, we look at al-Kashi's fundamental theorem, his calcula...

A Critical Analysis of the Origin and Nature of Classical Mathematical Economics: Why Classical Economists Did Not Use Mathematics?

The role of mathematics in economic analysis is not yet a settled question. Smith, Ricardo, Mill and other eminent classical economists did not use mathematics in their economic theorizations. We have defined classical mathematical economics as the whole body of literature in mathematical treatment of economics originating mainly from the contributions of Cournot,  Jevons and Walras. There are ...
